ASCII file generator error

Hey all, the guys came back form the feild yesterday after recording data for cross-sections of creeks. The total station was reporting the data back to them as horizontal distnace and vertical distance (HD, VD) (see image), and I've been given the .job files in terms of data.

I intially thought I could convert the files from the .job files into a useable HD, VD dataset that the total station was recording in the feild, though I get the error of "the selected job file could not be converted to a JobXML file" when i try to convert using the ASCII file generator. Also it seems the only style-sheet that is close to my needs is the "Veritcal Angle, Horizonalt Angle" style sheet, I can't find one for VD, HD?

    Any advice? Cheers!

    Hi Matt,

Try installing the latest office software update for TA from this link and see if solves the issue

If you are using a C5 or M3 in the field then you won't want the latest TA office files. You would want the TA 2017.24 or earlier office files.

You also could try converting the Job file into a JXL on the Total Station. To do this from General Survey, go into Jobs, Import/Export, Export fixed format, Trimble JobXL. Or if you want to create a CSV file of the coordinates select the Comma Delimited option.

Most Style Sheets that can be run in ASCII File Generator can also be run in Trimble Access. If you copy the style sheet into Trimble Data\System Files, then it should be available for selection in Jobs, Import/Export, Export custom format.

Unfortunatley we don't have the TS anymore as it was hired. The guys pulled teh Job Files off as the main data source.

I'll install the pre 2017 version to see if that will work. Do you have a reccomendation on how to get VD and HD as an output?

    Thanks!!!

If that fails then ask the company you hired the total station off to convert the job file into a JXL file.
As for converting the data into VD and HD, I can't think of a Style Sheet that will give you the data in that format, so you would need to convert the data using a spreadsheet. There is a style sheet available called Comma delimited with HA,VA,SD,time, date. You could use the vertical angle and slope distance output by this style sheet to compute the vertical and horizontal distances. Here is a link to the style sheet:
    https://trl.trimble.com/dscgi/ds.py/Get/File-720086/Comma%20delimited%20with%20HA,VA,SD,time,date.zip
Other style sheets can be found in the downloads section of the Trimble Access page:

I was still having issues with the older version of TA, though I used the online converter to update my .job files to the latest version and now the ASCII Generator works! So one problem solved.

I have done a bit of searching around but can't find a explanation on how to convert HA, VA and SD to VD and HD? Is there a simple enough process I can execute in excel?

    Thanks so much!

    mathew.
what is the end goal of your project. i would assume that you need a network adjusted csv points file that you are bringing into another cad file?
i am not sure why you would require SD and angles for any type of topo return? unless you are adjusting this data in another software?
why no use TBC for the adjustment and csv export?
i hope i am not missing something here. but from the few posts i can make a couple comments.
if you drag a csv into TBC you will only get coordinates. if you drag the .job file you will get all the raw data asociated with the field work(typically angles, distances and vectors). from the home page you can then open the optical spreadsheet and this will show the measurements. you can go into the main settings "cog" and go to view/optical and select the desired output to been seen on the optical spreadsheet. the data you are after should be there, but unfortunately it will not show the point asociated with it, only the "name" of the observation. if you are really after these values maybe you can cut and past from here. i have never tried it. or there should be a way to export your desired values. you might have to make a stylesheet for it.

but typically one would adjust the network in tbc and then use an easily built in tbc exporter to create a csv you can use in cad.

    hopefully this helps.

    Hi Matthew
You can use simple right angle trig to convert the VA and SD into VD and HD.
Good idea using the job converter, I didn't think of that.
