Issues opening files directly after 5.3 update.

  • 1.  Issues opening files directly after 5.3 update.

    Posted 04-29-2020 06:52

If I go to my files location on my computer and try to open, I get a series of errors and the file will not open. (pics attached) However, if I open TBC from desktop and then click the open project, I can select and open my drawings. What's the deal?

I was having the same issue.  It was mentioned that the update may have incorrectly associated the .vce extension with the installer. The solution was to re-associate the extension with the TBC executable.  However, in either Microsoft's or our IT policy, the only choices you have in Windows 10 are shown below. Choosing the TBC selection makes no difference and the ability to browse to the executable is not provided as far as I can find.

Mine works fine by clicking on the file in windows file manager.

Did you do the online update install method, or the download and install method @Tom Dew? I tried the online method.

I did the off line. I never saw the button to do online.

It is looking for the "TrimbleBusinessCenter.msi" file. It can be found here "C:\Trimble Downloaded Installations\Trimble Business Center 5.30\TBC". After I pointed it to this file, I never had the error again.

Thanks. This is exactly what the problem was and this did fix it. The error appears to be with the online download. We did the offline on another machine with no issue.

Where can we find the .msi file?

The path is shown in Thomas' reply above.

I don't have it at all

This issue has been logged in for review by the installer team - hope to have it fixed for the next update

    Karen

The MSI is only found in the Zipped Version of the Installation Package - it is a Self Extracting Installation Package. Once Extracted it becomes the Folders and Files of the Installation and you will not find it in the location mentioned above / earlier.

I believe that the issue is to do with Windows Associating the Program to open a VCE file with the MSI file in the Zip file - it seems to remember where you downloaded it to (the Path) and when you click twice on the VCE it runs the MSI for some reason.

In Widows type File Associations in the "Type Here To Search" Windows box

In the list of Files / File Associations find .VCE files and make sure that they are associated with the TrimbleBusinessCenter.Exe file found at the following path

    C:\Program Files\Trimble\Trimble Business Center\TrimbleBusinessCenter.exe for the v5.3 release installation

I believe that this is where the problem lies - if not let me know

I am currently having the same issue. Attached is the error I receive. The requested .msi, in the "temp" folder, doesn't exist and when I point it to the install package, it doesn't see or want to use the .msi in there. Interestingly enough, it will not let me open any project if I open 5.30 first. I receive another fatal error. I have tried reinstalling 5.30 this morning to no avail.

See my post from Friday and how to reassociate VCE files with Trimble

Business Center not the MSI Installation File

    Hi Alan,

I went through the entire thread before posting.

I double-checked the file associations as well. Everything appears to be in order but not working. One question, the'default apps' was set to TBC but I am not sure how to verify the path once set.

       Thanks again,

            Andy

I talked to the Installation Team this am and they commented that there is

a message in the installation to Reboot that if you do not do that then

this will / can happen - have you tried rebooting to see if the problem

    clears.

I have asked for clarification today and will post an answer when I get

that from the Installation group at Trimble.

    Alan,

After restarting, the original .msi error still exists. If I try to open a project from within 'Projects' in 5.30, I receive the error below. I am not sure if they are associated but both errors are new.

       Thank you again,

          Andy

PS: I remember having to use an 'uninstall tool' awhile back for another issue on another version, do you have that tool and should I try it? Furthermore, if you recommend reinstalling, should I try the 'online' or 'offline' options?

The Online Installer was what you used this time right? This version of

Install appears to have created this File Association problem a number of

times for different people last week - so my recommendation is go to the

    Offline Installer.

The Cleanup Tool was updated for v5.3 and I posted that over the weekend

for everyone - it is in the Blog Post for TBC Versions - should also be

high up on the Forum Posts as I did that Sat am.

    Alan,

I did use the 'online' installer.

I will give the cleanup tool a go and reinstall the 'offline' version and report back.

       Thanks,

          Andy

    Alan,

    1. Uninstalled 5.30 using windows uninstaller.
    2. Restarted PC.
    3. Ran the "Trimble_Office_Cleanup_Utility_x64_Setup.exe"
    4. Restarted PC.
    5. Installed the 'offline' version.
    6. Restart PC. (It does not prompt for a restart but did it anyways once the installation completed.)

    BINGO! Working again.

       Thanks,

           Andy

Job done - Good to hear

They apparently posted an Update to both versions on Friday that fixes

these issues - so I assume you downloaded on Thursday or Earlier in the

week or before they updated the Installation Packages on Frida.

Good to have you back in the land of the living TBCers
