4k displays

    All,

I am looking at upgrading my displays when I get a new PC and I was wondering what are the advantages if any of having 4k displays vs. "traditional" hi def displays?  I use a lot of drone data so point clouds and hi res photos are common place in my work flows.

    Thanks, Ben

I like to stick with standard HD (1080p) displays.  TBC is not really set up for 4k displays, at least in my opinion.  The icons get impossibly small, so then you choose the option to make them bigger but then it makes the text in the project manager silly big.  To be fair though its been a year or two since I tried it.

    Hi,

I've tested TBC with point cloud data with my 4K 43" inch display, and I would have needed a magnifier glass for it to work. The icons are small, texts are small, and individual points in the point cloud data are very much "invisible". Ways for it to work were:

    1. Changing the resolution on the display to 1440p made it much better, and workflows were way better than on my main 32" widescreen display
    2. Changing the scaling in Windows settings to 175%ish. This helped, but it also made everything else in windows too large, so I had to make the pages in internet browser for example scale lower, something like 70% if I remember correctly.

So, option number two messes other things up, and option number one makes a 4K screen pointless. Unless you go for a very large screen, something like 48" or up could be very beneficial.

What I noticed though, was that the large screen had 100Hz refresh rate, which was far better than my smaller screens 60Hz. Rotating the point cloud for example was way more fluid, and the separation of points remained high even when zooming or rotating. So, instead of going for 4K (unless you intend to buiy a very large screen), I can highly recommend going with 1440P and focus on getting the refresh rate up, I bet 144Hz on gaming monitors would be fantastic and am going to test that one in some point with my "off the clock" personal computer.

I have been using a 4k display on laptop now for a few years.  I did have to find a solution to the issue of the micro icons, but I did find one.  It won't let me upload the actual manifest file, so just email me and I can send it to you.  Hope this helps.  The instructions were pretty easy to follow.  TBC now looks 'normal' on a 4k display.  Also, I do use a lower res second monitor and the fix does not interfere with working between the two.  Let me know if you have any questions.

can you tell me the benefit of using a 4k screen versus a traditional 1080 monitor?

    Ville,

Thank you.  You are the first to address refresh rates.  Right not I am looking at a 38" gaming monitor with 144Hz.  It cheaper than going 40" at 60 Hz.

I must be the odd man out. I always avoided 4k because of the lack of good support for it. I bought a 32" 4k monitor to put in portrait mode for my other windows. I had to bring my setup home from my office and I brought the 32" 4k display only. I started using it with TBC and I loved it. Personally, I didn't think the icons were too small. They are small but  not too small for my eyes apparently.  I also checekd and I had the display set to 125% instead of the 150% recommended for that monitor in Windows settings. I don't know, I don't have any issues with it, but I do have a 32" display sitting right in front of my face.

    Adam,

So what advantage it there to having one?  Does it make the line work, point clouds or images look better?  Is it smoother is when viewing and rotating surfaces?

It seems so yeah, and I just think overall 4k is better on your eyes

Ever since using digital displays, be it computer, phone or television, I have always gone with the highest resolution that was reasonably affordable. Going to 4K was a significant improvement, especially in AutoCAD where I spend most of my time. I have a 32 inch monitor that is about 2 feet from my eyes, so with anything less than 4K the lines become obviously jagged. Now that I'm used to 4K, the standard HD looks like a relic from the past.

My first AutoCAD setup was 600x400, which was a significant and expensive upgrade from the standard 640x480 VGA of the time. How far we have come!

Some may shy away from 4K due to the obvious growing pains with the software. It took a few versions for AutoCAD, TBC and most anything else to catch up and properly size icons, buttons, etc. But going with 4K will help future-proof your monitor, and of course you can always "downgrade" your resolution temporarily until the software fully catches up.

With TBC, it is easy to make the buttons large, which works well with 4K. There are still some ribbon buttons that are extremely small, though.
