Before the layer search/filter box was added to layer dropdowns, you could click an object in the viewport to grab its layer straight into the active dropdown. That's broken now. The new search filter is great but it would still be nice to be able to pick the layer by clicking an object in the viewport. 

I second this. I didn't realize how much I used it until it was gone.

We were planning to wait for an additional small patch before updating to 2026. Now we will wait to update until this feature comes back.

This seems to be a major issue for you.

On my machine, however this seems to work:

Watched your video and figured out how to make it work.

In previous TBC versions, you could click Layer, which would drop down the list of layers, and then simply click an object on the screen to select its layer. It now appears the search box blocks that option.

If you click Layer a second time so it's highlighted in blue, you can then click the object on the screen, and it will select that object's layer.

Technically it still works just added a step.

got it. Thanks for the reply!

I will have a look at it - maybe we just need to add a "picker button" right of the dropdown. Clicking it initiates the selection in the graphic.

Then the functionality "grabbing a layer from an existing object" becomes more accessible as well.
