I will have a look at it - maybe we just need to add a "picker button" right of the dropdown. Clicking it initiates the selection in the graphic.
Then the functionality "grabbing a layer from an existing object" becomes more accessible as well.

Watched your video and figured out how to make it work.
In previous TBC versions, you could click Layer, which would drop down the list of layers, and then simply click an object on the screen to select its layer. It now appears the search box blocks that option.
If you click Layer a second time so it's highlighted in blue, you can then click the object on the screen, and it will select that object's layer.
Technically it still works just added a step.
