Categorize Point Cloud by Source

    Hello,

I am not sure if this is possible or not.  I haven't explored to much.  My memory tells me it is not something that TBC can do.

Is it possible to change the color of the point clouds by the source of the point cloud?  For example terrestrial and UAV.  It could even be broken down further, between regristration type, like scan to scan, or geo referenced terrestrial.

You ask why I would want this?  Well, when doing QAQC of UAV scans compared to terrestrial SX10 or X7 type scans, the best way to evaluate is to set all the terrestrial scans to one color and all the UAV scans to another color.  This can be done, but then all of the UAV scans are all the same color and all of the SX10 scans are the same color and you lose the ability to review and QAQC those scans by scan color.

I would like the ability to review scans by source and I don't think that is a large ask.  The program already hold most of that information.  Or at least some of it.  It knows if the point cloud came from a total station or Trimble type file import, it shows SX10 scans within the occupation station they were collected and it shows those point cloud files that were imported by external file as a scanner or camera, can't tell.

I think what needs to be added when importing point cloud files is what was the source.  It could just be part of the import check boxes, then under the point cloud rendering with all the other ways to look at point clouds, you would have the options to look at them by source and it would be easy to have all source types be one single color.  Now you have a really powerful QAQC tool.

    Thank you for considering.

i get what you are saying clayton. and would be nice if it was setup this way. there seems to be many needed improvements for qa in tbc.

one solution for you is to try to group your colors by specific pallets. lets say all terrestrial are shades of blue and all uav shades of red. this might get you close to what you are after. would be better if this was automated with options. or settings on import too.

another thing that is missing is a point to cloud qa comparison. similar to point to surface. unless i can not find this.

    and point cloud tilling.

and point cloud mass import, and or tile on import.

and settings for ground classification. cliffs don t work. or very bushy sites. noise reduction tools….

    Hi Ian,

Thank you for replying to my post.  I wonder if how many Trimble users realize that their best hope to getting product improvement accomplished in a direction that benefits them is to voice those product improvement requests here and to support other users suggestions so the Trimble technician that do read these forums are led in a direction to improving the product in a manner that is most beneficial.

The stuff with the point cloud, seems very straightforward, necessary and common place in other software.  I hope Trimble sees a programing path forward to accommodate these requests and suggestions.  The more tools available for viewing, reviewing, grouping, testing, etc. point clouds that are available the more able the program becomes and we are just scraping the ice berg here.  We shouldn't all have to become machine learning (ML) experts to be able to teach the software to look for the results we need to find.  Having some more functionality in the software would help greatly with the already powerful tools available.
