Does anyone have a workflow to get a DEM file, specifically from a Lidar deliverable, into a workable format in TBC? I can get it to import, but I don't see how to use the elevation data. It just comes in as an image, viewable only in plan view.

    Hey Elijah,

Your DEM is in a Raster format. Typically this means that each pixel in the raster has a corresponding elevation.  I have not had much success myself working with these sort of files directly in TBC.  You would need to convert them into a point file or some other format in ARC GIS, or FME or something to be usable in TBC.  If the DEM was derived from LiDAR, your best bet might be to find the raw LiDAR data that the model was created from as TBC is great with .LAS and .LAZ files.

Sorry I am not much help here, just thought I'd share my experience.

Thanks Scott. I do have access to the las file. I was provided contours and wanted to verify 1 to 1 the surface from which they were created. Starting to chop up the point cloud would reset in new contours being created. Appreciate it.

If you have imported a LiDAR generated file, it is a DEM. If you open the 3D view tab, you will be able to rotate and view.

You can choose the point cloud and "Extract Ground". That will clean the point cloud to reveal a Bare Earth Elevations. You can use this to create a surface and then use that surface in whichever way you want.

Hey Saif, as far as i know the extract ground is a routine for a point cloud, not a raster dem. Let me know if i am incorrect.

    You are correct.

A LiDAR DEM would be a 3D data. Right?

    Thanks.
