Exporting Classification / Regions

    Kia ora!

I find myself jumping between Trimble Business Center and Trimble RealWorks, and here are the reasons.

TBC is far superior to RealWorks for its auto classification, so more often than not I use it for clean-up and classification.

RealWorks is miles ahead when it comes to registration. So when I am using X7 scan data, or when I want to mix and georeference my terrestrial scans with SX10/SX12 data, I use RealWorks.

    Here is the scenario:

X7 data is registered via planes in RealWorks, then exported as a linked TDX to TBC to run auto classification and start clean-up.

Once I am happy with the clean-up and classification, I send it back to RealWorks via TDX (I have to create a region called 'Junk' and delete it before sending it back, otherwise nothing is cleaned) and run cloud registration via planes again (minus the junk)

I then open the SX10/SX12 data in TBC, start clean-up and registration, and export it as an E57 to RealWorks (so I am registering to one chunk of reference data).

In RealWorks, I register the X7 point cloud to the SX10/SX12 reference cloud, then send it back to TBC for classification of everything.

Each time this is sent back and forth, the classification does not come through. Am I missing something, or is classification not supported in a TDX? Even if I select just one region and export as a TDX, it sends everything unclassified.

A few reasons why I would like to keep using a TDX:

    • It is the smallest file size
    • It works seamlessly and quickly between TBC and RealWorks
    • Sometimes point cloud work is better in TBC, and better in RealWorks for other tasks. It depends on the project, and being able to jump between the two is a great advantage, but not when I have to create bloated E57 or LAS files

The only workaround I can think of is exporting each region as its own E57 or LAS, but that takes a long time and really starts to blow out the file sizes.

Can someone explain how they are exporting regions, and whether there is a way to utilise the power of a TDX for this?

I am also using ReCap Pro and want to import classified point clouds. Other than the method mentioned above, is there a way to get everything across as a package instead of individual point cloud regions?

In short, Using TBC for auto Classification, takes out a huge amount of manual clean up and saves time, which is why I jump between the two. I would like to be able to export the classifications created in TBC to firstly Realworks, and then other programs like ReCap Pro or Civil 3D

    Ngā mihi,

    John

Hi John, In my opinion you are going back and forth between the two software's unnecessarily. TBC supports both Plane and auto target registration. However, I do agree TRW is better with cloud to cloud registration in difficult data sets. Also, can you explain why you are transferring the SX10 data as a e57? Both TRW and TBC will accept the jxl file that contains the scan data. Both software's will lock the registered sx10 scan station to hold the site coordinates created during setup in the field.
