GPU Usage (unsure if I'm in the right community to ask)

  • 1.  GPU Usage (unsure if I'm in the right community to ask)

I'm finding that TBC is not using the GPU at all. I've tried through the NVidia control panel (NVidia RTX a2000 12 Gb) and through the display/graphics settings to "force" processes to use the gpu (twpe 3d reconstruction, tbc and uas applicationsmaster). I've not been able to add gdaladdo.exe.

Basically, TBC is maxing out the CPU (particularly on loading in images with gdaladdo) and when doing the 3d Reconstruction. This causes at least 60% to 100% CPU usage which causes everything else to lag or stall (my taskbar clock stayed at 10:02 most of the day during processing a large project).

Is there a resolution for this? I was under the impression that TBC utilized the GPUs for heavy lifting (tbc itself maxes gpu at around 4% once I shoe horned it into using the gpu).

Thank you and please feel free to redirect me to the right community if this is incorrect.

The actual graphics in TBC, in terms of shading, rendering, etc, is extremely low. Not Galaga low, but maybe Mario 64 low.

It seems TBC, and much of the CAD industry, is limited to a single CPU core for a lot of the positional computations.

I appreciate the old school video games comparison.

Why am I buying high end video cards, due to specs, when it's not actually being used???

When we got our new laptops we noticed the same thing.  One of my colleagues went into the BIOS and deactivated the on-board Intel graphics completely, forcing the NVidia card to be used by the system.  This seemed to work very well - if it's the only choice (and the much better choice by far), then the computer has to use it.

IT has informed me that the onboard can't be disabled.

If you go to windows settings>display>graphics>custom settings you can assign which graphics card you want to use for any program.

    No worries.

I've tried several variations: Nvidia control panel, Windows graphic settings, and both together with no joy. And I have designated the Nvidia card and not the onboard in Windows (11 - not sure if that makes a difference or not).

Have you tried changing settings in the BIOS at boot? That's what we had to do.

I'll have to get IT try that. They've got these machines locked down pretty good.

When you go to the task manager and look at which GPU TBC is using, what does it say? If you assign the NVIDIA card to TBC it should show it in task manager  (you may need to right-click on the column headings to get the GPU column to show)? I've never had a computer not start using the NVIDIA GPU when it was assigned to a particular program.

If I recall the updated specs for TBC, the GPU ram listed is for use with point clouds from scan data since that has millions up to billions of points. Photo use, of any kind on a computer, uses very little GPU time.
