How to Calculate Demolition and New Pavement Quantities Together in TBC (Similar Existing & Design Contours)

    Hello Everyone,

I mostly work on site renovation and improvement projects, and I frequently deal with demolition quantities along with new construction quantities in the same area.

I would like some guidance on how to properly calculate demolition and new pavement quantities together in Trimble Business Center.

    Here is my scenario:

    • Existing asphalt pavement removal: 15 inches thick for 220 SY

    • New asphalt pavement placement: 18 inches thick for 180 SY

    • Remaining area: 6 inches of topsoil (landscape)

    • Existing and proposed contour lines are almost the same throughout the site.

Since the existing and design surfaces are nearly matching, I am unsure how to correctly model and calculate:

    1. The demolition quantity (asphalt removal)

    2. The new pavement build-up

    3. The landscape/topsoil placement

    4. Any necessary elevation adjustments

How should I properly set up the surfaces and volume calculations so demolition and new pavement can be handled accurately in the same area?

How can I perform demolition takeoff directly from MSI Manager?

    • Can demolition be modeled as a negative depth item?

    • Or should it be handled through a separate condition layer?

    • What is the best practice to avoid conflicts between removal and new construction quantities?

I would really appreciate if someone could explain the correct method or workflow in TBC for this type of renovation project.

    Thank you in advance!
