Implement Autosave

Out of the many programs I use on a daily basis, TBC is the only one that does not have autosave - it's also by far the most likely to experience random crashes when working with larger projects. I've lost countless hours of work over the years because of this.

What are we doing here? Add autosave to the program.

Closest you'll get is the autosave reminder. They would have implemented autosave by now if they were going to.

When I'm doing important work in TBC, I think to myself, "what would Jesus do?"

    Jesus saves. CTRL+S

Haha @Nelson Hays You only lose a full days worth of a work twice, before you're slamming ctrl+s all the time

Considering the time to save in some of my projects, I'm glad that I'm not regularly interrupted mid workflow. Having said that, I have the Save Reminder set to 30min.

No other software that saves automatically or at least saves a copy in case of a crash interrupts you while it saves. It can take 30 seconds to save in TBC which is ridiculous and is the main reason I don't save every 5 mins.

The price goes up every year, but you need macros for basic functionality and QOL improvements to work around the outdated/neglected core of TBC. It's annoying.

I like Autodesk's autosave.  It saves a copy of the file you are working on in a specified location, like a temp drive, but not in the background, so it will interrupt you and can take time.  I like this better than an automatic save, I end up making changes all the time I don't want saved, so Autosave would be problematic.  Two cents.

i fully agree something needs to change. it can take a half hour to an hour to load a point cloud into tbc and then you start to work and have a crash and have to start over. what a waist of time. often i will run point cloud classification overnight because it can take hours. often i will come back and have tbc crashed or windows rebooted. either could be avoided with an auto save.

we are in an era where the tech is smart enough. tbc should be able to auto save in the background while you work. if you are doing an intense procedure then force it to auto save first and again after if needed or delay till you are doing less intense tasks and it can autosave in the background.

autocad s system has saved our team many many times, many many hours of rework.

If I was in charge, I would not prioritize an auto-save function. I would move all point cloud processing to a cloud-based app and keep TBC lighter weight with less bloat from utilities and functionality only used by a small percentage of users.

Are you sure it's a small percentage of users? I don't use point clouds/photogrammetry/mobile mapping at all but it seems that's where 95% of all development in TBC has been focused for at least the past 5 years.

Exactly. It seems 99% of the budget since 2019 has been toward features not used by the majority of users in the Civil Construction market. Ostensibly the product is a 50/50 split, but management was taken over by GeoSpatial when TBC and BC-HCE merged back together at the release of v5.0. Last I heard, more of the higher-edition (more expensive) licenses were purchased by CEC users. I don't know precisely how accurate that statement was when I heard it, but it sure seems right to me in my experience.

What has been developed in the last 5 years for CEC users? Off the top of my head, overexcavation, dynamic corridor linework. Is that it?

2018-19 had a few cool things added - Create side slope, vertical design, and the utility module. Since then it's been pretty dry.

    Good morning,

I am one of the trainer here at Trimble. Although not technically an auto-save feature there is an option to have TBC prompt you to save at regular intervals.

This is one of the first thing we discuss during our training session and highly recommend setting this up for the exact reason you mentions below. Nothing worst to spend hours digitizing drawings only to lose all that work for reasons out of your control.

    To set this up:
    • Go to the Support menu and select option
    • Go to the Project Management section
    • Check the Enable reminder
    • Select your time interval from the drop down from one of the available options ranging from 5 to 60 minutes
    • Click OK
At the set interval, TBC will prompt you to save your work, the first time, if it's a new project you will be able to chose the name and location, basically, bringing in the Save As dialog. After that, it will simply save it over the existing file.

Like I said, the main issue with this feature is that it takes too long to save - if I saved every 5 mins a significant portion of my day is spent looking at the spinning wheel instead of actually working.

    Hi Patrick,

The feature request is more involved than what you are suggesting and the prompt was addressed in one of the first responses.  The best approach to an autosave is not to save over the work you are doing, in case you need to roll back to the previous save point, or some other reason, but to have a save location that saves your work at an independent location that can be recovered in case of a crash or something like that, similar to Autodesk's Autosave feature.  Something that is done in the background, so it doesn't interrupt processing, caveat, Autodesk can't do that!

Thank you for your response, though.  I appreciate it. CB

Autosave would be nice...won't deny that.

In the meantime there is the save prompt reminder that is available as has been mentioned.

Another thing to note is that when dealing with large datasets, TBC stores a lot of information in RAM, particularly for undoing. Clicking save will clear this RAM, releasing the stress on a machine and in a lot of cases reduce the number of crashes. This is particularly of note when using the classify point clouds tool and the keep in and keep out function.

Not ideal I know, but its what we have at the moment.
