LAYER MANAGER REQUESTS FROM 5 YEARS AGO

  • 1.  LAYER MANAGER REQUESTS FROM 5 YEARS AGO

    Posted 03-25-2024 09:06

This is a quote from a request made FIVE years ago. Since that date, no change. Layer Manager still looks and works like a DOS 3 utility program.

"Would it be possible to make the column widths in Layer Manager adjustable (or auto-fit something like like Excel columns)? Then, make the adjusted column widths persistent so that when a particular project is re-opened the column widths are the same?

An alternate could be to make the Layer Color, Line Style, Line Weight, and Display Priority columns "auto fit" and the Layer Name and Group Layer adjustable.

I notice also that the "Protect" Column heading is truncated because the column is too narrow by default to show the full word."

    My request still stands.

I agree.  Although we can now adjust column widths, they are not persistent and they are tedious to get changed since adjusting one changes the others to the left.  It's also really silly and maddening that when you click on a layer name, the whole row for the layer gets highlighted in blue, and then also the text of the layer's name gets highlighted in the exact same color blue so you can't tell that it is highlighted, then when you start typing something to go at the end of the layer name rather than adding to the name it deletes it since it was highlighted, unbeknownst to the user.

I'm also pretty sure I remember Trimble posting a couple years ago that they are no longer monitoring this site for bugs and feature requests.  They said those should go through your Trimble dealer now. lmao  Maybe one of them will chime in here if that is not the case anymore.

Wayne: Yep, nothing ever changes. Total waste of time to ask for improvements via local Trimble dealers.

Wayne: In fact, the more I work with this the more I realize what a complete POS it is. It won't minimize so you either dock it and use up screen space (TBC is already the most cramped space of anything I work with) or buy another monitor. Utterly pathetic. Worse when you realize that a few lines of readily available, pre-written code would fix it.

i think the trimble guys do monitor the forums. but i also think there is a weird disconnect between the distributors, the clients and the forum. the trimble guys on the forum say to contact your distributor for issues. you can do that and they make a support ticket and usually for update requests i have never heard anything for follow up. i have recently had a frank distributor who told me that if i get through to someone on the forum then it is great that you are talking directly to them and try to make some action there. personally i feel like the cost for maintenance does not justify the updates that come out. tbc and access are still the base software that we have been using for years. it is easy to complain about the situation. and i also want to point out that the people working on the software seem to be trying their best with the resources they have. but the maintenance fees are significant and for this trimble should be able to dump a lot of time/people/money into making it top notch. my opinion is that bug fixes are trimble s problem. they should have budget from peoples initial purchase to fix bugs at no cost to clients. new features could fall to maintenance costs.

so, i agree. the layer dock should be able to auto hide like the majority of cad software. this feature is great when trying to compare to plans or multitask with something else. and i look for it with tbc.

also common with cad is that the dock settings(column widths and order of columns) are held when opening the next project. tbc has a lot of ribbon settings that i do not use. there might be something to hold the layer settings. not sure.

one thing i find odd with tbc is that it has the layers in the project explorer and then again in the layer explorer. it seems like this could be combined into a more powerful single/clean setup. similar, why is there a command line for tbc and then another cad command line with a few commands. if these were together this would be simpler too. and if the commands were the same as most basic cad commands this would also help. or the alias able to change easily to match what someone is used to using.(i know there are editable short cuts but this is not the same)
