Level Editor Export Question / Request

Is there anyway to export a .dat file from the Level editor? Or any file that can be imported into a different TBC project? Also, is there anyway to reorder the run tabs? I want to add a run between two other runs but it requires a complex marry-go-round of splitting and merging. This sub-program seems to have lost support, but maybe this could be implemented.

I'm not aware of any. You can export a Trimble Data Exchange containing the level observations and drop that in a new project, however.

Yeah. I found that, but it wasn't what I was hoping for.

Before TBC could let you key in a level run, I used to create M5 .dat files in an ASCII file editor and did quite a few of them. It is a bit tedious but can be done. Start with a good one and for the first one, I'd use one with the same amount of turns if available (but you can copy and paste extra lines if needed) and no side shots.

My memory isn't great but here are a few tips:

    • Use a good text editor like Notepad++
    • There is a line at the end of each run that sums your backsights, foresights (both rod readings and distances) as well as closure. If they are not exact you will get an error.
    • The arithmetic needs to be exact on the whole thing
    • If you see an error on import, it will tell you what line it is on in the import report.
    • It will also report an error if the line number on the left side is non-sequential, but those errors don't cause it to fail on import. I would usually correct those so that I could get past it because I rarely typed it all correct on the first try and those line number errors get annoying.

There're a number of work arounds and other apps to use. One of my jobs here is find ways to fully utilize Trimble software, so ultimately, I'd like to see Trimble update the software itself. I was hoping that I'd just missed a setting or didn't try the right exporter. Right now it seems there's no way to consolidate modified (point number corrections, benchmark elevations, etc.) level runs from multiple .vce.
