Rename, Tag, and Comment on Imported Files

  • 1.  Rename, Tag, and Comment on Imported Files

This is a feature request. I realize it's similar to some of the other recent posts (HINT HINT), but I couldn't find another post requesting these specific features.

I often manage TBC projects with many, many imported files. It's not uncommon for the crew (and myself) to forget to rename their job files to something unique (i.e. traceable) until after I've imported and processed the data. This leads to a situation where I might have 2 or more JOB/DAT files with the same name. When I'm using the various tools (Project Explorer, Selection Explorer, View Filter Manager, Level Editor, etc.) or checking the properties for various elements, this becomes problematic because "file name" is often the only identifier to the source, which is no longer specific to one file.

I would really love the ability to rename a file after it has been imported. But even more importantly, I'd also like the ability to add tags and comments to those imported files so I can keep notes about what's going on. For example, we may have multiple crews out on a big project and so I'll get 2-3 files for each day. The earlier days are typically focused on primary control, with the latter days being primarily topo but a mix of control, boundary, and topo work. I would really like to be able to add a comment like "Topo along Main St", and then add a tag like #topo, that I can then use later for sort/filter/search operations (because those features were added at the same time :))

This would make using TBC for larger operations far more efficient and user friendly.

While I'm dreaming... I'd also like there to be a "remove duplicate observations" function that eliminates identical vectors, either on import or after the fact. Sometimes I get a clean job file for each day of work, and sometimes I get the same job file with the new work tacked on, leading me to have 2, 3, 4+ copies of the first day's data. I have my ways of dealing with this but they're slow and annoying, mostly because it's one of those things that's really easy for a computer to do and really hard for a human to do.
