T100 overheating with X7 ?

  • 1.  T100 overheating with X7 ?

I heard that the T100 tablet overheats when used with the X7 scanner. Is that for real or just a rumor? I've seen some posts saying that the T10 overheats... but the newest one does as well? can anyone confirm this?
    Thanks

I used T10 with X7 just once, two years ago. It was in the full daylight. T10 was burning hot and chewing thru batteries like crazy.

Nevertheless it got the job done (including scan colorization in the field).

Thanks. Do you use the t100 now or something else?

I use the T10 tablet (Trimble Perspective) with the X7.  Yes, the battery/backside does get HOT to the touch but I've never had it shut down or crash on me.
I've found that if you limit the X7 to just the data collection and registration that it helps cut back on the heat and battery use.  Save the colorization and panorama processing for the office computer.
Try to keep it in the shade as much as possible etc.

This is a problem that is going to be relative to a couple of factors:
    • Temperature on the day you are processing
    • How many stations you are handling in a single project
    • How fast you are moving between setups
    • What you are doing
If you are doing small jobs, in a cool environment then it should be ok, however both tablets will overheat at a certain point either shutting down the unit or meaning a project can't be exported from the device.

We have done some testing and found it does heat up a lot for jobs where there are a lot of setups being shifted between quickly, it also heats up when it is trying to refine, colourise and export as well as export to a third party format, again the bigger the project the hotter it gets. We don't sell the T100 with the X7 for this reason and to continue to use the T10 tablet.

General rule of thumb we work off for the T10 tablet for Perspective is:
    • For exporting a project from the tablet no more than ~160 scans should be in a project.
    • If colourisation is to be done on export, it should be no more than ~120 scans
    • If exporting to a third party format it should be no more than ~80 scans
NOTE: THIS IS BASED ON 2 MINUTE SCANS, IF USING HIGHER DETAIL SCANS THE NUMEBR OF SCANS RECOMMENDED WILL DROP.
The testing we have for the T100 did not improve on these limits.

One other thing to note here is that you can do bigger jobs, the project should be split up into smaller sections and running individual projects in each section.

I would recommend holding onto a T10 and wait until a more suitable solution is released.

    Hi Ross, Hi Craig,
not sure if you are aware of but since September 2021 we are providing Trimble T10x Tablet solution for our Trimble X7 users. New orders for Trimble X7 can be placed to get Trimble X7 with Trimble T10x (P/N X7-100-00-T10X). Here a short overview about the difference between Trimble T100 and Trimble T10X:

A few comments about Trimble T10 vs. Trimble T10X performance difference.

    • When you are doing a Refinement with 100 Scan Stations on Trimble T10X, it is 5x faster compare to Trimble T10
    • Colorization of all scan parameters (either 15 images or 30 images - HDR on/off) Trimble T10X is 2x faster compare to Trimble T10
    • Processing High Quality Panorama process under Finalize & Export Trimble T10X is 2x faster compare to Trimble T10

As Trimble T10X comes with a more powerful specs (processor, RAM and storage) you can expect to handle more Scan Stations per project compare to Trimble T10. Trimble T10X Tablet would be the solution for customers how are dealing with more Scan Station 160+. Important to note Trimble T10X is only available for Geospatial right now.

I hope this helps a bit to use the best and powerful tablet with Trimble X7 to get your work done.

    Best wishes

Steven, That's great news. I had no idea this was available. Thank you for posting. Ross's information above is so valuable as well and helps me set expectations and identify what we really need, which now I see is the T10x. Thanks again!

    Steven,

I have a new T100. It really hasn't left the office yet. When sitting on my desk charging it is exceeding 120 degrees. It was sent to Trimble for warranty repairs. After returning, it is still getting hot and Sitech is telling me that it falls within normal operating conditions.
