TBC v5.90 Thoughts

  • 1.  TBC v5.90 Thoughts

I haven't had my team upgrade yet. I forget the new features at this point, but I read the release notes and nothing there sounded like it would help us much (we build mostly site models, subdivision, commercial and small roadway). I haven't heard too much, I figure it must be somewhat stable. Any reason to upgrade right away?

I build mostly roadway models. Having to completely rebuild merged/combined surface was always a huge pain/time sink. I upgraded immediately after seeing the new "Create Composite Surface" function.

That function alone has already saved me a great deal of time and headaches when revising complex surfaces.

v5.90 also seemed to resolve an issue I was having with certain data collectors not showing up in my WorksManager work order section in v5.81.  I haven't used any of the other new features.

Hi Joe.  I've had the same issue with data collectors not showing in 5.8 over the last few months.  Has the update to 5.90 allowed you to see ALL of the data collectors you couldn't previously see?

    Brad,

Here are the specifics of what I can recall:

We had a WorksManager Project with 8 devices added to it.

    3 dozers, 1 excavator, 1 TSC3 Data Collector, 1 TSC7 Data Collector, 2 T10 Data Collectors

When I would previously go to the WorkOrder function in v5.8, all I could see was the 4 machines and the 1 TSC3. I could not get the TSC7 or T10's to show up. A coworker of mine who was still running v5.7 did not have this issue when opening the same project.

Because I could still manually download the work orders from the WorksManager site, I did not do much trouble shooting into this issue.

After updating to v5.9 all 8 devices now show up again in the WorkOrder device.

All that being said, I am one person, who noticed an issue with one job, that now seems to be resolved after updating to v5.9

Thanks Joe.  FYI I did exactly the same process from WorksManager to get my workorders down from the "missing" collectors, and I had our local Trimble support replicate the problem in 5.80 not long ago.  I'll update soon.

So, this one was intriguing to me as we do a lot of subdivisions, but our process involves building surfaces that don't overlap. I hated how difficult the merge surfaces command could be, that you always had to just separate surfaces. I guess in roadway work it's common that you have overlapping surfaces that don't have a significant grade difference between them. When you build a ramp out that intersects with mainline, usually there's overlap but barely any grade difference. Our process is creating completely separate surfaces that don't overlap for any combined surface work so that's why this command wasn't as appealing to me. Unless I'm looking at it wrong.

I have updated, but more out of habit than necessity, I find that very little has changed that affects my working method.

The composite surface command doesn't work well with a lot of the surfaces I build as I build a lot of (almost) vertical faces and it seems to inaccurately triangulate these.

Overall it works and hasn't caused any delays in my work, so I'd say it's safe to upgrade.

I just don't get it. I haven't seen much on here at all about v5.9 and I feel we're having more issues with this release than any other. I don't see as many tiny bugs or whatnot, but this has not been very stable for me. I almost never have TBC freeze up on me and I think in a day I've had 3 files freeze up on me that I had to force close. Also, it is making me log in with my subscription license every single time I open a new project (for now). Sometimes those login issues go away after a while but I haven't seen it yet. Just not too sure. I'm not one to downgrade because I think it's important to give feedback to Trimble but this one we may actually decide to downgrade everyone to 5.81 until the first patch. I don't know.

That's odd, I had a single bug that logged me out of my external services briefly, but a single login sorted that back out.

I run off a HASP key so I haven't seen any drops in license. But I imagine it would be a similar thing to the external services logout, I just wouldn't notice because I don't rely on it for the license.

I've had no bugs (that were not already present in 5.81) since updating really.

Yeah it's not good for me. Getting warning errors occasionally. Then times I can't zoom at all and have to close and go back in. I had an issue this morning where my regular windows cursor was all I could see and couldn't select any lines. I'm normally one who is pro-upgrade to help provide feedback, but we may have to all downgrade back to 5.81 which would really suck. I've got to see how many in my team have similar issues. Maybe it's just me
