TopoDOT LAS/LAZ Export into TBC Not Matching

  • 1.  TopoDOT LAS/LAZ Export into TBC Not Matching

    Posted 3 days ago

I'm doing some working in TopoDOT and exported a new point cloud that I have tried as an LAS and LAZ and they are shifted up and to the right. I reimported the same files back into TopoDOT and they align perfectly. Any suggestions?

US Survey Feet vs International Feet? What are the TopoDOT coordinate system settings? What are the TBC coordinate system settings and units? What settings did you select in the dialog box when importing the point cloud into TBC?

Everything is in US Survey Feet. The weird thing is the break lines I am drawing in TD and importing into TBC are lining up perfectly. TBC is in PA S USSF. When pulling in the LAZ I specified USSF. LAS didn't ask.

Also to note, I classified the PC in TBC, exported an LAZ, created a DOT file from that same LAZ in TD and did some work with it, cleaned it up with some reclassifications and exported it as the LAZ/LAS. Then imported it back to TBC. So the original and reimported cycle all started in TBC in the same project Im still using.

Another thing I've noticed but forgot to mention is sometimes the first time you bring in a point cloud it will shift a few feet, but when you delete and bring it in again, or bring it in again on top of itself, it lines up perfectly. I never determined why this happens.

Just a couple things here. First, TBC works better with LAS versus LAZ files so I'd recommend avoiding any use of LAZ. Second, can you confirm if you set your coordinate system/datum, geoid model, and units prior to brining any data in? Third, when you bring the las/laz file into TBC, are you choosing Grid scaled in the project's system or ground, or manually specify the system? Lastly, ensure you are working in the 2011 realization of NAD83 in Topo Dot, as you cannot use legacy realizations of Nad83 within TBC. Honestly, it should be supported in Topodot either!
