Use JPG and JPW files in TBC and ACCESS - (geolocated images using a world files)

Does TBC and ACCESS not support world files?

Does ACCESS not recognize JPG files at all?

If so how to I get the files to load in either program?

    Which version are you using?

I have no problems using them in TBC or Access.

    2022.11 ACCESS & 5.81 TBC

TBC wants me to manually georeference the image and does not recognize the world file.

I can browse to the image in ACCESS, but when I click the image it does not show up in the map files. I figure that's because it is not geolocated, but it doesn't see my world file either.

Tested it in the 2022.11 simulator and TBC 5.81, works for me with a JPG I'd referenced, exported and reimported. I also tried with the ending JPEG, as in your screenshot, works as well.

That the worldfile isn't visible in the "select file browse window" is normal. It just needs to be there, in the same folder, and must have the exact same name before the jpg/jgw.

Can you upload the files you've trouble with.

The world file must have the suffix jgw and not jpw.

    a .png needs .pgw

a .pdf needs .pgw   TBC converts a PDF into a PNG

    a .tif needs .tfw

    a .bmp needs .bpw

it's always the last two characters that need to be gw

I assume the first and last character of the original suffix plus a "w"

probably following the list from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_file

Access seems to support at least JPG, PNG, BMP and TIF

TBC at least JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIF

in both cases the TIF doesn't support rotation.

Thanks for that Ronny. Changing that file extension is easy enough.

    .wld would work as well.

From the TBC F1-Help (I tried .ini as well but that doesn't seem to work)

    Kia ora!

This is an old thread but it helped me in TBC.

I had the same issue bringing in GeoJPEG from our public database.

I moved the JPEGS only into the TBC Project and I had the same issue, TBC makes me try to place them when I drag and drop just JPEGS.

What I needed to do was copy ALL the data that came from the public database (LINZ) into the project i'm working in (it can be from anywhere, I just like to keep the data together in the same project under public data)

TBC loves a file path, so now, when I just drag and drop the JPEGS into TBC, it georeferences them automatically, as it can read the JGW files that are in the folder.

Hope this helps anyone else having this issue.

    Hi John,

When you say "copy ALL the data that came from the public database (LINZ) into the project", do you mean that you copied the .jpg and .jgw files (and other files as well) into the TBC project folder (where imported files get copied to)?

So when you dragged the .jpg files into the TBC application, TBC was able to find the associated .jgw files, and also other files needed for georeferencing?

If the .jpg, .jgw and other files were in one folder (besides the TBC project folder), could you drag in a .jpg from there?  Or did that not work, and it was required that you copied those other files into the project import folder?

(just trying to understand the original issue and your fix)

    Thanks,

    Kia ora Quan,

That is correct. For example, I have "Project Number – Project Name MASTER" as the TBC folder name. For data management, I "try' to keep all relevant project data in there.

Inside "Project Number – Project Name MASTER" I have a folder called Public Data, and within that I have subfolders such as LiDAR, Aerial Photos, etc.

I'd downloaded some aerial photos for a job we are currently working on (higher resolution than Trimble Maps for this task) and, from my Downloads folder, simply dragged the JPGs into the Aerial Photos folder.

I then dragged them into TBC and it asked me to place them, rather than placing them automatically.

I looked at this thread and decided to go back to the Downloads folder and add the rest of the data that came with the download into the same Aerial Photos folder

I then tried again to drag and drop the images into TBC, and this time it worked as it always has. My assumption is that TBC could now see the JPW file path associated with the images and could place and position the JPGs correctly.

    I hope that makes sense.

The only files that were dragged into TBC, was the JPGs, however they had to come from the same folder that contained the JGW files.

Please reach out if you need any more clarity.

    Ngā mihi,
    John

That makes total sense and is behavior to be expected.

It's, how shall I phrase it, rather optimistic to think that any software will find the connection between the bare pixel data you drag in from your project folder and the location information left behind in a random folder on your machine.

Image and world file need to be in the same folder and need to have the same name. At least for JPG/BMP/PNG.

GeoTiffs, on the other hand, are often delivered with an additional world file but very often carry the location data encode in themselves, making the world file superfluous.

If you drag a file with pixel data into any CAD software it will first test if it can find location data in the file itself.

If not, it will try to find a file with the same name and appropriate suffix in the source file's folder.

But there it ends. Why should it start a lengthy search through your whole computer and network drives in the hope to find an appropriate location file?

In order to keep the files together you can just zip them and drag the ZIP file into TBC (not in Access). It will unpack it automatically and perform the appropriate import.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the detailed description. It sounds like the main fix was to drag the .JPG from a folder that also included the .JGW

If you had dragged the .JPG from the Downloads folder (which also had the .JGW), I'm guessing TBC would have geo-referenced the JPG appropriately.  And would copy those 2 files to the project folder - but I appreciate that you prefer to organize the project folder yourself.

In your screenshot, I also noticed these other files:

    AV26_5000_0304.jpg
    AV26_5000_0304.jgw
    AV26_5000_0304.jpg.aux.xml
    AV26_5000_0304.xml

Are these needed for geo-referencing?  (or useful to keep?)  Your workflow also puts these in your project folder, and I was curious if that was necessary.
