Problem:
In TBC v2026.10 I can't open/load an existing legal description template file. I can save a new one and pick it from the recently used list, but I can't load one created from an earlier major version of TBC (v2025.21, etc.).
Background:
At the top of the Legal Description Writer command, the first input field is "Template file:"
In earlier versions of TBC (I checked v2025.21, v2024.13, v5.00.2 (2019)), there are two UI controls:
- A drop-down list
- Contains:
- <Default> (comes shipped w/ TBC)
- Template file path currently used by project
- Saved in VCE and template VCT files
- Recently used template file paths
- Stored in Options (User.Options file in your roaming AppData)
- Resets when you delete User.Options
- Resets when you use a new major version of TBC
- Can be saved/loaded by exporting/importing ALL options via Options command
- A "..." browse button to select a template file from disk.
In TBC v2026.10, the browse button was apparently removed.
- The term "Legal" does not appear in the 2026.10 Release Notes
- I did not find a ReadMe file in the installation.
- I saved the default template for v5.00.2, v2025.21 and v2026.10, and the only change from 5.00.2 to the newer ones are 2 new XML tags (StartJumpToNestedArea and EndJumpToNestedArea). So I don't think it's a template file compatibility issue.
Workaround:
Add your desired template file paths to the recently used list.
- Create a folder "Legal Description Templates v2026"
- Run Legal Description Writer command
- Leave "Template file:" as <Default>
- Click "Edit / Preview" button
- In the "Description Template Editor" dialog, click the "Save As" button.
- Browse to the folder in Step 1.
- Enter the file name of your template file.
- Click the "Save" button.
- Repeat #4 for each template file you want to add to the list.
- The folder in Step 1 will have the right file names, but only default content.
- Select <Default> for "Template file:"
- COPY (do not move) your template files to the folder in Step 1.
- Now the folder in Step 1 will have the right file names AND the right content.
- You make copies so that your originals are safe - like if you decide to blow away this folder when a new version of TBC comes out...
Now you can select your desired templates from the recently used list.

I can create an extension command (C# macro) for managing the recently used list - if there's enough community interest.
