DiNi Download - TBC and Data Transfer

We have been using a Trimble DiNi 0.3 for around 10 years.  Recently we have been unable to connect to the unit via the supplied USB  cable within TBC - or separately using Data Transfer (although they are one and the same really).  We are running TBC v5.90.  We have tried alternate cables.  We have uninstalled and reloaded Trimble Data Transfer, and TBC.  We have updated USB drivers.

We are currently using a 15yr-old laptop running Windows7 and using Trimble Data Transfer to connect and download the data from the DiNi.  This is OK, but not ideal.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Does anyone have any ideas what the issue - and solution - may be?

Thanks!

Hi Brent,

I guess you have win10/11 installed?

Have you installed the drivers for Trimble DiNi USB? When you connect it, go and look in device manager if there are any unknown devices connect.

I have attached the drivers for Trimble DiNi.

Guess I went a little to fast there, I saw that you hade the USB drivers for the dini installed, if that is correct then it show in device manager when connected or if it says uknown device, if no device at all I guess it might be an issue with the DiNi

Thanks Anders.
Yes - we are running Windows 11.  And I have checked that we have the driver files that you supplied installed - we do - and a Trimble USB device is in the device manager list.  We have also tried running it after bypassing our security software; running it outside of our office network; and using direct standard USB ports (not via docking stations) - all no joy.  We will try another Win11 laptop that has not had any Windows updates installed for 6months, but don't hold out any hope.  Our local Trimble "support" have been advised but have not come up with any solutions at this time.

We also have a second DiNi that also no longer connects.

I guess it is just one of the "Trimble" glitches....

We were having the same issues with driver compatability when trying to plug in to a PC running Windows 10 or newer. Now we use a cable and transfer straight to a USB stick.

Hi Brent, I just helped a customer through this yesterday. First, they had to do this as an administrator. In the device manager, they had to pick the Dini level showing a triangle I believe. It said it did not have compatible drivers. Next, they downloaded and extracted the Dini Drivers to a folder on their PC. Then they pointed the software to the folder with the drivers. Once they did all of this they could use Trimble Data Transfer or TBC to download the level.  You can find the drivers here.  https://community.trimble.com/viewdocument/re-dini-download-tbc-and-data-tr?CommunityKey=d961b046-1661-40f3-8d7e-0bde6866a14d&tab=librarydocuments

Thanks Frank.  I tried the procedure you described, but didn't get any message or prompt about not having compatible drivers (both within TBC and separately with Trimble Data Transfer).  However, whilst I had these open I created a "new" DiNi Digital Level device connection under "Edit Devices" and was able to connect - finally.

We have updated to TBC version 2023.10 recently so perhaps in that update the drivers were updated and/or the bug we were experiencing was sorted.  (We had not tried a DiNi download since that update).

Thanks for your help.

Alas - I spoke too soon...

Although I reported that I was able to connect to the DiNi (both in TBC v2023.10 and Trimble Data Transfer) - I did not actually advance to download a level file.  When doing his next step, the 'transfer" starts but never finishes.  The wee 'receiving' window is open and it implies a data transfer is happening, but the progress line does not advance.

So the connection problems continue, and I have only progressed one stage with the problem.  If I mange to stumble across a fix I will return to this thread to post a report....

I am astounded that Trimble don't seem to worry/care/bother about this issue.

Hi Brent, I just had this problem with our DiNi level when we got a new Windows 11 computer. I solved the issue this way and I hope it helps you.

  1. Open Data Transfer program.
  2. Click on the button "Devices..."
  3. Click on "New..."
  4. Scroll all the way down the new device list and click on "Trimble DiNi (USB) Device"
  5. Click "OK"
  6. Name the new device and click "Finish"

Thanks Alex.  I did try adding a new device also - but that did not work for us.  Have resorted to downloading onto a USB stick via a download cable with a female USB end.  Cheers.

Hi Brent,

Sorry to hear that didn't work for you. I did want to clarify one thing in case it wasn't clear in my previous post. In your post you mention creating a new device and it was a "DiNi Digital Level". I tried that option too but it didn't work for me. However, further down the list there is an option for a "Trimble DiNi (USB) Device" that one did work for me.

To all,

Having this same issue, I have loaded the drivers and device manager shows Trimble device working properly. however the only DiNi device available when creating a new device is Trimble DiNi (COM1) there is no option for Trimble DiNi (USB), what determines what devices are available in the create device list?  BTW Running Windows 11, 24H2.  Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

(For some reason I have lost my direct log-in - and am forced to use our company log-in to access this forum and respond to your question....)

We never did resolve the direct connection issue.  In the end our local Trimble "support" dude provided a cable and transfer straight to a USB stick (P/N 73841019 and Cable - 0.18m, Hirose 6 pin to USB stick or compact flash card reader) as per Ben's solution on 11-26-2023.  As this worked - we have given up persisting with trying to connect like we used to and like any normal digital device...

Sigh ;-)
