I have imported a DXF containing a DTM (or TIN) and created a surface.
I need to export this surface via the Machine Job Site Design exporter function.
I select the surface and "Add", please see in the image the red box on the right. The object is immediately ignored.
Is there any dialog that tells me why the object was ignored? Any ways around this ?
I have since fixed the flagged objects, but they are not the issue.

Ignored objects

The Design Map is used for showing linework. When you select a surface object type to be included in the Design Map, we ignore it since a machine operator wants to see the linework, not the surface triangles. Select instead the appropriate linework that accompanies the surface and you'll be good to go. The surface you're selecting is what should be chosen in the box above called "Surface:"

Thanks mate that is helpful. So the surface object is ignored but the height information it still exported into the .svd ?

And I can include all of the 3D Linework data even though the "Model Type" is selected as Surface, as opposed to 3D Line work ?

Before sending out that surface.  Trim triangle that are not part of the propose design. The SVD is the design and the SVL is the linework.  The design map is just to send linework that show the operators location for edge pavement, grade breaks, ditches,  you can also add text to the map.

@Francisco Guerrero

Thanks for the info, really helpful for a beginner.

I didn't need to trim this Surface as it is all one area for the machine operator. In future, how would I trim a triangle off a surface ? This surface is only a part of a larger design file and if I could just do one larger surface that would be better for the operator.

  • So the surface object is ignored but the height information it still exported into the .svd ? Yes, the surface object is what's being sent in the "Surface" field and is not needed in the Design Map as well.
  • And I can include all of the 3D Linework data even though the "Model Type" is selected as Surface, as opposed to 3D Line work ? Correct. Model type "Surface" gives you the ability to reference a surface for vertical design data. The Design Map is a separate entity and what comprises the .svl file. Simply put for this scenario: SVD = Surface; SVL = Linework.
  • In future, how would I trim a triangle off a surface?  There is a command called Trim Surface Edge. If you open the command and press F1, you'll see how to use the command. The command pane itself also has a graphic that give a general idea of what it's used for.
