When using the capture image function to produce a background image for use in siteworks.

No matter what file type I use it only produces a black image, I have used this function frequently in the past with great results but can't seem to get anything but a black image now.

What am I doing wrong?

Chad,

Can you confirm the version of TBC that you are using? Also, are you going to the CAD ribbon and then Images Group and then "Capture Image" tool? If so, i just tested this in the latest version (2025.21) and it worked without an issue. Lastly, are you creating a "plotbox" or selecting one in the capture image tool? If so, try NOT referencing one. Lastly, have you tried changing the "Save as type:" from JPG to something else like GIF or TIFF?

I am also on version 2025.21 and am using the CAD ribbon > Images Group  > Capture Image

I have tried with and without a plotbox, have also tried all file types. The .tif file type gives me an error message all others just creates a black image

I should also add that I am trying to capture an image of a PDF that I have georeferenced

I can however capture an image of a point cloud or regular linework just fine

My end goal is to be able to use the captured image along with the kml as a background image in siteworks, I’ve done this in the past with great results but can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong now, or if something has changed since the last version or two

My macro SCR_CreateGeoRefWorldFiles from my GitHub repo RonnySchneider/SCR_Macros_Public may be an option.

It enables you to select multiple referenced PDF's at once and batch-create their world files and copy them somewhere else.

Haven't worked with Siteworks in a while:

  • not sure if they still have that size limitation, the exported image from a PDF might be too large
  • not sure if they support rotated images
  • not sure what file formats they support; as standard TBC converts a PDF into PNG; I try to update the repo tonight, the latest version does have an option to convert to JPG

Chad, what is your scale and size set for your plot box?  I have had this issue when I use a large plot box size (in inches).  Meaning, I have better luck when set the plot box size; to say 11x17 and adjust my scale.  I have also had issues with an 11x17 plot box that needs a scale over 200.  In this case I would increase the plotbox (probably double it) in return I could then reduce the scale.  You may have already tried this, but this did solved my "black image" issue.  It was then adjusting size (in inches) and finding a scale that cooperates.

If your image is too large (resolution), you will be prompted when you try to use or enable the image in siteworks.  I personally use the image background on all the projects I can.  Yes, on the larger projects, this can be challenging.

I have also had this issue when I postponed a windows update.  Something so simple, it's worth a shot.
